As you know the two main types of goals are long term and short term, but staying committed to these goals is what is important.
I find the best way to do this is to start with your short term goals. Make sure you are taking a step each day towards them. Even if it’s just a baby step. An example would be a goal of losing weight. Let’s say you want to lose 50 lbs by the end of the year. Sure, you can cut carbs cold turkey and give up soda and candy, but more than likely by doing this you will end up caving to your old ways and any progress you made taking the extreme route will end up being in vein. You want to start small and work your way up to the ideal diet you want to follow. Start with making one meal out of the day “healthy” and then having a small dessert everyday, then day by day maybe begin to cut out the dessert and add more veggies to your meals. Again, its all about taking it slowly and creating those habits at a pace you can keep up with.
The same is with your goals in the workplace. Create little habits that will help you reach those short term goals faster by making that one call a day, or taking the extra step to email leads that said “maybe” to your pitch.
ALWAYS check your progress! At the end of each week, see how far you have come by comparing where you were at with your situation at work at the beginning of the week to where you are at by the end of the week. You may not see a whole lot of progress the first week or two of doing this, but come the end of the month I am certain you will start seeing those results you are aiming for! Going back to the example I made earlier, I would think you would want to track your measurements and even weight throughout the weeks you are working out and eating healthy right? Again, same thing applies here in terms of business and sales.
Make sure you are hanging around people that encourage you to complete your goals! What they say is true, you are the average of the 5 main people you hang out with! Back to our example, if you hang around people that constantly eat junk and are not trying to reach the same healthy lifestyle you are, you will end up again, caving to your old ways. You’ve got to surround yourself with like minded people! It is VITAL!
In summary, if you want to accomplish those long term goals, you NEED to reach those short term goals. Taking initiative and making those small steps will surely get you there in no time. By creating new habits with friends and checking your progress, you will find yourself at the top of the game in a matter of time!
